My fabric stash is getting out of hand. Again. I’m back to plopping my new acquisitions into whichever box is easiest to reach. So I thought I’d try to get it in order again, and have again run into the problem of organization. As in, how does one categorize these things? By color? By theme? By quilt (many were bought with a specific quilt design in mind)? Do I put my fancy prints in a separate box (I have a weakness for the gold-accented fabrics, especially Robert Kaufman’s designs)?
Each method has its pros and cons. Right now I’ve got them sorted by type: nature, solids/blenders, geometrics, small prints, etc. But that really hasn’t worked too well. I’m debating sorting them by color, since that seems to be the most popular way, Not quite sure why I didn’t do that to begin with, other than the fact that I used to go looking for a specific style of fabric before I looked for a specific color. That’s changed the more quilting I do, so probably color would be the thing to try. And deciding which color is predominate can be a real challenge sometimes.
Then there’s the problem of storage. I’m constrained by the size of my office (and the fact that I share it with my husband and his magazine reselling on Ebay). My fabric is currently stored in bins in wire cubes, but it’s often difficult to find what I’m looking for without digging through the bins and messing up all my neatly folded yardages. I’m wondering if just stacking the fabrics flat in the cubes would make it easier to see what I have, or don’t have.
And what does one do with those delectable fat quarters? Mix them in with the big pieces? Put them in their own cubby?
Sigh. I read some book a while back on creating the perfect quilting studio. I think I had to wipe the drool off some of the pages.
Well, I best get my fabrics put away again before my toddler awakens and decides to “help” mommy sew.
UPDATE: Gee, if I’d surfed a bit before posting, I would have found this totally cool idea at Splityarn.com. I’m heading into town tomorrow–maybe I’ll go check it out. Thanks for the wonderful suggestion!
